Great Backyard Bird Count

The snow didn't last long and this is what my garden looked like today. I actually MOWED the lawn. Spring is coming, I can feel it. Oddly, the news is reporting that we will get some snow this week. I am skeptical.

The Great Backyard Bird Count was this weekend. I counted birds today and have a list I'm very happy with.

The Anna's Hummers are still visiting the feeders. Sometimes they get sparce as they start to gear up for nesting....which they are. I could hear to males "singing" in the trees.

I counted a number of Juncos. Although they go to the trays to eat millet, many of them have gotten quite good at clinging to the suet cages.

I can always lure in the jays with some peanuts. They never miss out on hording these away!

Another winter visitor, a Yellow-rumped Warbler made an appearance and got counted on my list.

I love to see those little guys!

Here is my bird count list:

Cooper's Hawk - 1
Mourning Dove - 4
Anna's Hummingbird - 1
Downy Woodpecker - 2
Northern Flicker - 2
Western Scrub-Jay - 2
Black-capped Chickadee - 3
Chestnut-backed Chickadee - 1
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1
Bewick's Wren - 1
American Robin - 1
European Starling - 8
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1
Spotted Towhee - 2
Fox Sparrow - 1
Song Sparrow - 1
White-throated Sparrow - 1
Golden-crowned Sparrow - 1
Dark-eyed Junco - 9
House Finch - 5
Lesser Goldfinch - 2
American Goldfinch - 1
House Sparrow - 1

Next time I'll show you what's blooming in the garden and what veggies are growing too!

Did you do the GBBC? What birds were you excited to see?

  1. I also did the GBBC, as I usually do. My list is similar to yours, although you have a few more, as I had to work most of the days and could only watch in short stretches. I do have one bird you don't--the lone varied thrush that has been hanging out here this winter. I didn't see any varied thrushes last winter, so I am happy when this one drops by. They are pretty birds.

  2. Great sightings. I am so amazed to see your green grass, hummingbirds, etc. I can't wait till that time here. :) Hope you are well!

  3. I didn't do a GBBC as I was helping my son with a film for the 48 Hour Film Project. But, traffic at my feeders is picking up. They're really attacking the suet. I may have to try your recipe and make my own.
