Nesting was the word of the day

Nesting is in full swing at Ridgefield. If the birds aren't feeding babies, they are making them, building a nest, or singing to establish their territory.

We would never have seen this Bushtit nest if it weren't for this parent making it's way back to the nest.

Good parent--- bringing in a big meal for the little ones....

Good parent---- taking out the poop sack (the work is never done). Birds have fecal sacs so it makes the house (nest) cleaning easier for the parents.

Further down the trail we saw Cedar Waxwings collecting nesting material! This was exciting...beautiful birds doing neat things!! The cottony fluff off the cattails must make a cozy nest.

More from Ridgefield next time...

  1. I'm so glad that you posed the Cedar Waxwing photos. Now I can with with almost certainty that it was a pretty little flock of them that I saw in the apple tree last month.

The nest is so phenomenal. I am continually amazed by birds and their nest-making abilities.

Our squabs did well and have moved on with their parents. The baby robins are still in the nest. I'm not peeking on them anymore as I know that their eyes are open. We have had a nice little sparrow family hanging about the north feeder (although it's empty). The yard is so alive. :)

  2. Awesome! I had never seen a Bushtit nest before, so that photo was particularly neat to see. Love the Waxwing with cattail fuzz in its bill!

  3. Oh the waxwings in the cattails are gorgeous... I suppose they're gorgeous wherever they are, but I've never seen them on cattails.
