Morning Frost to Afternoon Sparrows

This morning the frost was especially striking so I took some macro garden shots.

In the afternoon I headed out to Sauvie Island to find some sparrows on Rentenaar Road.

All the likely suspects made an appearance except the Harris's and Clay-colored. I now see they were reported today, but I spoke to another birder on the road and he hadn't seen them either.

I got a trip from a secret person about a secret owl in a secret barn. I drove over there, but didn't see the owl. Instead I found this carcass and feathers. My first assumption was that it looked like a Kestrel, but thought that seemed unlikely. After looking at the photos more, and zooming in on the foot, I think it might have been one afterall.

  1. Wow, a dead predator! I bet the secret owl killed the kestrel.

I haven't gotten my fill of sparrows this winter, I may need to visit Sauvie Island! Secret owls don't make friends!

  3. those morning frost shots are beautiful. the dead kestrel is pretty brutal, murder barn is really making a name for itself... maybe zombie kestrels next!?!

  4. Ooh zombie kestrel... does that count as a lifer? Funny my last couple visits to murder barn there was always a kestrel perched on the wire next to the first non-murder barn. RIP. Bummer on the Harris's, that bugger is unreliable- at least you got White-throated and Lincoln's!
