Weekend Birding

I made a new birding friend and we met up at Tualatin Hills Nature Park and started the day. The parking lot was sunny and a few birds were out enjoying it as much as we were. We walked around the lot then headed over to Dawson Creek and finally, ended the day with a walk through Tualatin Hills Nature Park. A nice day of birding.

I got a tip and located this Great Horned Owl in NE Portland on Sunday. Great views of a beautiful bird!

  1. Nice owl shot! Is that a rough skinned newt? Very cute whatever it is.

    1. I assume that's a Rough-skinned Newt. They have signs on the paths to watch out for them. I almost stepped on that guy. He is the same color as the leaves on the trail and easy to miss.

    2. That is indeed a Rough-Skinned Newt, very common on the trails at Tualatin Hills Nature Park (where I work on the weekend). They certainly blend in with leaves. Unfortunately, sometimes they are not noticed and succumb to a walker's shoe or biker's tire. They are so cool, though, but be sure to wash hands after handling one, as their skin contains a neurotoxin they use as a defense against predators.
