Cooper Mtn & WA County

Anna's Hummingbird collecting lichens for a nest

I started the morning at Cooper Mountain Nature Park. The birds are starting to vocalize and interact more. I ended the day out in Washington County farmland. Somewhere in the middle I managed to get my peas planted in my veggie garden. And today is another sunny day!

  4. Is that first bird a Hutton's Vireo? It has that thick beak and sure looks vireo-esque. Love those bluebirds! And those green tuber things too- what is that? Super cool.

    1. Yes, Hutton's! They were singing all over the place. Green tubers? I guess you mean the lichens. Not sure what they are called. Guess I need another field guide :)

    2. Ha I don't even know what tubers are. I think I just meant tubes but tubers sounded right. I don't know what I'm talking about half the time.

  5. I was liking Cassin's Vireo because of the spectacled look and gray upperparts.

    1. but now google images has me confused...maybe both of them have the whitish across the top of the bill. And the fact that it's kinda early for Cassins?

    2. Yeah Rhett pointed out to me once that Hutton's are kind of spectacled-looking also.

    3. I was told my a experienced birder that Huttons were present singing there on Saturday. I heard a song I didn't know, watched, then saw them. I was not certain I would know them from Kinglets, but that song is very distinct. I just listened to their song on Cornell and it was definitely a Hutton's. Gosh I like all this talk about my lil ole bird :)

  6. Great photos! We were at CMNP yesterday and heard MANY Hutton's. And I think the "tubers" are False Pixie Cups, Cladonia chlorophaea. Plants of the Pacific NW Coast, Pojar and MacKinnon p 501 (I already have the field guide =)
