Whalen Island

Tuesday it was foggy again. We headed to Clay Myers State Natural Area at Whalen Island. Right off the bat we heard and saw a Hairy Woodpecker. A nice new trip bird.

Yes, this Western Meadowlark put on a good show on the fence post. He was the grand finale at Whalen Island.

This is a great little hike and well worth it. There were lots of both types of kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Pacific Wrens and we saw a few Hermit Thrush.

The woodland mushrooms were awesome:::

Final trip total was 66 species. I suppose we could have looked at those gulls a little harder and got some more....

  1. Those mushrooms are fantastic and the color on the meadowlark is stunning. Such a beautiful bird.

  2. That's one of my favorite places! I've never found a meadowlark there, I'll have to look harder.

  3. I love those mushroom pics. We've had a great flock of yellow-rumped warblers feeding in our prairie and surrounding trees this past week. The juncos and white-throated sparrows have arrived too.
